The Best Driving Schools in Liverpool That Will Make You a Confident Driver

Instructor Qualifications: We verified that the schools utilise top-tier coaches who are registered with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

This ensures you receive high-quality tuition from professionals who know the exact standards examiners look for.

Local Route Expertise: We looked for teams whose instructors actually live and work around the specific local test hubs like Norris Green and Speke.

Having this deep regional knowledge helps pupils master tricky junctions long before their actual test day arrives.

Vehicle Options and Availability: We evaluated whether the businesses offer both manual and automatic options alongside flexible scheduling. It matters that you can secure consistent weekly slots without getting stuck on a massive waiting list.

Value and Transparency: We examined the pricing structures to make sure there are no hidden fees or sneaky upcharges. It’s vital that block bookings or intensive packages offer genuine savings for students and young learners.

Getting behind the wheel for the first time feels equal parts exciting and terrifying. If you’re trying to navigate the busy streets around the docks or tackle a chaotic roundabout near the city centre, finding the right instructor makes a massive difference.

We completely understand how overwhelming it feels to choose from the various options across Merseyside, especially when you want to pass on your first attempt without burning through your savings.

That’s why we did the heavy lifting to find the best driving schools in Liverpool, matching your personal schedule and budget so you can get your full licence with confidence.

How much does driving school cost in Liverpool?

Budgeting for your licence depends on your transmission choice, but standard hourly rates generally run between £35 and £45 across the region.

Lesson TypeAverage Rate
Manual (Hourly)£35 – £45
Automatic (Hourly)£40 – £45
2-Hour Lesson£68 – £85+
10-Hour Block Booking£310 – £420

Finding an instructor who actually stays with you from your very first lesson until the moment you pass makes a massive difference. That personal consistency is exactly what founder Darren Bennett focuses on at Team Driving Academy.

He deliberately keeps the business small to avoid the rigid, corporate feel of national franchises so that no student slips through the cracks.

I recently spoke with a cousin who used them, and she loved how her instructor lived right in Wavertree, utilising deep local knowledge to map out real-world practice on actual Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) test routes.

Plus, every single session has a clear, tailored goal to match your specific learning pace rather than following a scripted syllabus. The team also practices absolute honesty regarding test readiness with zero hidden fees.

However, take note that their smaller operational footprint means high-demand weekend slots can bottleneck quickly.

Pros

  • Hyper-local Liverpool route practice
  • Free home pickup and drop-off
  • Guaranteed single instructor consistency
  • Practical test dates within weeks

Cons

  • Capped operational schedule capacity

Chris Kelly Driving School actually pioneered modern crash courses back in the 1980s. Operating as a large independent provider across the North West, they maintain a substantial fleet of vehicles that gives them excellent availability for pupils in Liverpool.

Cons

  • Mandatory peak-time lesson surcharges
  • Strict forty-eight-hour cancellation rules

Has done a fantastic job of teaching me to drive

Chris Kelly Driving school, more specifically my instructor Paul N, has done a fantastic job of teaching me to drive, coaching me through the anxieties of the road and keeping me on pace to become a good driver. From his calm demenour, to his limitless patience, Paul has gone out of his way time and again to work through the challanges of the week and made sure that I have been comfortable in my own experience. If we all had an instructor as wonderful as Paul, the roads for sure would be a safer place.

Heres to you Paul 🎆

Hours: Monday to Friday, 9 am–8 pm; Saturday to Sunday, 10 am–3 pm

Ashley Neal Driving Instruction provides an incredible library of free video tutorial guides alongside over twenty-five years of professional instruction across Merseyside.

When I watched their specialised tutorials for nervous drivers, it became obvious why they maintain such a strong local reputation.

Stepping into the driver’s seat feels a lot safer when you can preview tricky local roundabouts online before your lesson even starts.

Plus, I love that they enforce a strict policy against car sharing, ensuring you receive complete one-on-one attention without wasting your paid hours picking up other pupils.

The large team offers excellent scheduling flexibility with both male and female instructors across a varied fleet of automatic and manual cars.

However, their block booking discounts are strictly restricted to weekday hours, and you have to budget for an additional mandatory test-day vehicle hire fee.

Pros

  • Trusted quarter-century local track record
  • Strict one-on-one private lessons
  • High automatic instructor availability
  • Free comprehensive video route guides

Cons

  • Weekday-only restrictions on block discounts

Brilliant instructor

I had Arash as my driving instructor, he was absolutely amazing and I passed my test first time yesterday. He is a brilliant instructor I would recommend him to anyone in the future who would like to learn to drive. So helpful and so nice. He helped me so much

To get better at roundabouts and my driving faults. Such a lovely man and I am grateful for him helping me pass first time. Amazing xxx

Really enjoyed our lessons

I passed first time with Lewis Gibbons and had a great experience learning with him. I really enjoyed our lessons and felt we made good use of the time. Going into the test, I felt fully prepared, and since passing I’ve been driving confidently and comfortably on the road. Highly recommend Lewis to anyone learning to drive.

4. The Driving Academy

Website: https://thedrivingacademy.com/

Address: 25 Goodlass Road

Contact: 0151 283 2929 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday to Friday 8:00 am – 8:00 pm | Saturday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Learning from an organisation that actively trains other driving instructors means you’re getting an exceptionally high tier of coaching expertise.

As an officially registered Official Register of Driving Instructor Training (ORDIT) centre, this school utilises a family-focused vetting process to ensure their team is genuinely patient with anxious beginners.

They place a massive emphasis on hyper-local test route preparation, guiding pupils through specific pitfalls around the Norris Green and Speke area. And I love that they also provide free access to a theory study app.

If you’re busy managing home maintenance projects or booking local pressure washing to spruce up your property, their dedicated booking system keeps your schedule completely stable by locking in the exact same time slot every single week.

They’re a fantastic option for long-term consistency, but choosing an automatic car here requires a higher baseline rate, and weekend slots incur extra costs.

Pros

  • Direct preparation for specific local pitfalls
  • Verified high volume of positive feedback
  • Guaranteed single-instructor weekly slots
  • Complimentary access to theory study tools

Cons

  • Higher daytime baseline rates for automatics
  • Premium pricing additions for peak hours

Kept me calm and reassured throughout

Lee was my driving instructor, and I can honestly say he’s been absolutely brilliant from the very start, all the way to today, when I successfully passed my driving test!

Lee kept me calm and reassured throughout, and was friendly all the time. We were able to have a bit of a chat and as well which really helped keep my nerves at bay, and allowed me to naturally learn.

Honestly, Lee is one of the best instructors I could have hoped to have, and I’m really grateful for his support

Took her time explaining things to me

Marie was my driving instructor, she was very patient and calmed my nerves a lot of the time when i got stressed. Nothing was too much trouble and she took her time explaining things to me whenever i didn’t understand them. She was an amazing driving instructor and made my experience of learning how to drive a positive one. i would highly recommend Marie as a driving instructor.
